Most companies recruit sheep for two reasons. Firstly, they are sheep themselves and conclude that it only makes sense to hire likeminded individuals. Secondly, the masses are sheep, doing and thinking more or less the same thing.
You might be at school, thinking that one day you’ll be working for that big company you’ve always wanted to work for, or you might be a graduate in a similar position. Are you that kind of person? Have you always followed the crowd and done what you were told to do? If so, go! You’ll fit in great. If that’s you, stop reading, you don’t need to carry on.
For the rest of you, those who are different. Those that think differently or don’t follow the crowd, do just that. Follow the masses and you’ll not only hate the work you do, but you’ll end up hating yourself because it’s not really you that you’re trying to please.
Big companies that all the people apply for and all the jobs that people think they ought to choose are filled with those type of people. The people who followed the masses before them. If you don’t get on with the masses in school or university, what thinks you’ll get on with them all now? Trust me, the money will only numb the pain. It won’t disappear.
Bad companies limit themselves to the masses. They advertise graduate only positions as it’s a cheap and easy way to discriminate. It’s their loss. If you can read, write and spell, you’re ahead of most of your contemporaries.
Great companies hire the needles amongst haystacks. The diamonds in the rough. I’m talking about those who are willing to be themselves and put their necks out. Your talent is thinking and being different, utilise it. Focus on you and what makes you tick. Bill Cosby once said “I don’t know the secret to success, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone.”
